According to a report made on the Yellow River in 2008, the Yellow River was severely polluted. A third of the water was polluted due to sewage of nearby fast-growing cities. The polluted area was extremely unstable and it could not be used for manufactured, natural, and industrial usage. Of the pollution, 70% of the discharge was from industrial waste, 23% was household garbage and the other 7% was from other sources. The main time era of the pollution was the Communist Era. In the river, the pollution inside are excessive quantities of domestic sewage, industrial chemicals, pesticides, and nutrient runoff from agriculture. Also, there is small problems with the economical dams made. The numerous dams created lead to massive ecological damage; many hydroelectric projects were known to have a major impact to massive relocation of Native people, and high reservoir siltation. Also, near the basin of the river, there are huge ecological problems due to deforestation and intensive human usage.
Also, there are some problems that has no relationship with pollution, but the Yellow River's habit. Every year, there is at least 1 flood made by the Yellow River. According to research made by China, the floods are just little decoys and there is a very huge flood progressing. China says that the defenses against the floods can protect a ’30 year’ flood. But, there are many evidence that there would maybe a ‘100 year; catastrophic flood which happened in 1761 and 1843. The flood has been believed that it will come before China could 100% protect the flood or the gain of major resources for China.
There are hydroelectric dams placed in the Yellow River. Some of the biggest dams on the Yellow River are the Longyangxia, Lijiaxia, Liujiaxia, Yanguoxia, and the Bapanxia River. The Longyangxia Dam was built in 1992 in Gonghe Country, Qinghai. The Liujiaxia Dam was built in 1997 in Jainca Country, Qinghai. The Liujiaxia Dam (Liujia Gorge) was built in 1974 in Yongjing Country, Gensu. The Yangioxia hydroelectric power station (Yanguo Gorge) was built in 1975 in Yongjing Country, Gensu. The Bapanxia River (Bapan Gorge) was built 1980 in the Xigi District in Lanzhou in Gensu.
